Michael Yuras - a Life of Stewardship
Michael Yuras was born in 1925 at Abernathy, Saskatchewan. He led a full and active life in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, as a member of the Knights of Columbus, and as a lover of nature with a keen interest in birding and photography. He received Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, and after years of teaching at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, he retired to Trail, British Columbia, where he passed away in November of 2010 at the age of 85.
Michael is particularly remembered as a man who lived an exemplary life of stewardship, submitting his time, talents, personal efforts and possessions to the principles of his Faith. He devoted himself to the care of his elderly mother and brother throughout their times of frailty and need. He generously supported other members of his extended family who had suffered misfortune. In his final act of commitment, accountability and responsibility to God, he bequeathed a substantial portion of his estate to worthy Catholic charities including a considerable contribution “to be used in providing for the education of Candidates for the Priesthood and the growth and expansion of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the Province of Saskatchewan”
Michael Yuras lived the prescription of our Lord, “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” By joining in his selfless example of stewardship we, too, may hope to gain that “inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.” (Luke 12:33-34)
