Biggar church of the Sacred Heart constructed 1952-1971; R.M. 347. [closed]
BIGGAR — The church of the Sacred Heart is the first church of the parish.
The church was constructed between 1952 and 1971 on a two lot site in north-easterly Biggar. The site was blessed on June 14, 1953 by Rev. Theophile Hurko. Bishop Andrew Roborecki honoured the parish with several visitations and blessed the cornerstone of the church on October 3, 1954, and the church patron painting on November 9, 1969.
The wood constructed cruciform church, 80 x 34 feet, stands on a high concrete foundation and has two towers on corresponding sides of the main entrance; these towers have imitation brick asphalt siding and, according to the architectural plans, will be apexed by cupolas. The remaining exterior walls are finished with stucco and contain, as do the towers, rectangular windows with arched summits.
In the interior the walls have two-tone hardboard tiles, the floor is covered with linoleum and carpeted with a thick red carpet at the center aisle and in the sanctuary area. Dominating the interior is a vaulted ceiling from which a large chandelier is suspended above the central area of the nave. The main altar is in an elevated sanctuary which has two adjoining east and west sacristies with exits to the church grounds. Behind the main altar hangs a large church patron icon; two additional icons of the Holy Mother of God and St. Nicholas are found along the lateral walls of the cruciform church on corresponding sides of the sanctuary. These icons, oil on canvas technique, are the art work of Theodore Baran.
Opposite the sanctuary, above the vestibule, is a choir loft which is reached from the vestibule. The church basement has been finished and serves as a parish hall with a well equipped kitchen. The entire structure has electricity, central gas heating and plumbing facilities.
The architectural plan of the church was designed by Rev. Philip Ruh. The exterior carpentry was done by John Shudlik and Eugene Sabada while the interior carpentry work was done by Peter Sembalerus and other members of the parish. Construction was coordinated by Michael Yanchynsky. All parishioners worked voluntarily during construction and made generous financial contributions to cover the construction costs of $50,000. Financial aid was also received from numerous organizations including $300 from the St. Josaphat Mission Society of Saskatoon and $3,000 from the Church Extension Society of Toronto, Ontario.
Ukrainian settlers arrived in Biggar and surrounding area in 1912. The first church services were served by the pastors from Saskatoon in a local Roman Catholic church. In 1946, following a holy service served by Rev. Walter Firman, the parishioners attended their first organizational meeting and elected a parish council consisting of: Michael Malyk, president; Con-stantine Ostashewski, vice-president; Nestor Maybroda, treasurer; Stephen Diduch, secretary. In 1951 the following members were added to the executive: Sofron Worobetz, Michael Samson and Paul Wolchak. On July 27, 1951, through the efforts of this executive the parishioners purchased a two lot church site for $220. In 1952 the succeeding executive was elected which also served as the construction committee and consisted of the following: C. Ostashewski, president; P. Wolchak, vice-president; S. Worobetz, secretary; Michael Samson, treasurer. From 1961 to the completion of the construction the executive was headed by Joseph Blocha. During this period the Rev. T. Hurko commuted to the parish and administered to the spiritual needs of the parishioners. The first permanent pastor of the parish was Rev. Rudolph Luzney, followed by Rev. Peter Lisowsky and Rev. John Worona. Since 1964 the parish has been served by the Rt. Rev. Mitrat J. Olynyk through whose efforts the construction of the church was finally brought to completion.
In 1946, during the formation of the parish, there were 9 founding families. In 1961 the parish consisted of 40 souls (Directory), and in 1975, 15 families were registered to the parish. In 1976 the parish was under the directorship of: Rt. Rev. Mitrat John Olynyk, pastor, Nestor Maybroda, Steve Maybook, Constantine Ostashewski, John Polywkan, Joseph Blocha, Nick Senik and Luke Ryshytylo.
The Ukrainian Catholic parish of the Sacred Heart at Biggar is under the pastoral charge of the Saskatoon Cathedral Parish.
