BROADVIEW — The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the first church of the parish. [closed-no church]
The church and its two lot site in south-westerly Broadview were acquired in 1961 from the German Lutheran Community. Bishop Andrew Roborecki honoured the parish with a visit m 1970.
The rectangular wooden structure has a tall pyra-midically roofed front tower that serves as a vestibule, imitation brick asphalt siding on all exterior walls including the tower and a shingled gable roof. In the interior the walls are finished with donnacona. The central aisle of the nave and the elevated sanctuary are carpeted. The church has wooden pews which seat approx. 100 persons, electricity and central gas heating. There is no choir loft and no sacristy. A bell, which was obtained from the CPR station through the efforts of the first executive president of the parish, is presently stored in the church. A belfry is planned for the future.
Ukrainian settlers who arrived in this area between 1913 and 1916, and again between 1948 and 1949, came predominantly from the Yavoriv and Peremyshi counties. They attended holy services at the neighbouring
Earishes as well as at the local Roman Catholic church. i 1960, with the help of Rev. R. Homenko, they organized into a separate parish and purchased a three lot church site in Broadview. The parishioners, with the help of Rev. J. Worona, held their first organizational meeting in 1961 and chose their first parish executive consisting of Andrew Horejda, president, Eliasz Wojna and Peter Diduch, members. Later William Fai assumed the duties of P. Diduch while Clarence Demchak assumed the position previously occupied by the late A. Horejda. Through the efforts of this executive, financial contributions of all the parishioners and fund raising projects of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, a church structure was purchased and altered to the requirements of the Ukrainian Rite. The costs incurred totalled approximately $1,200.
The parish was established by thirty-eight founding members. At present the membership has decreased significantly as younger members continue to leave the community for greater job opportunities elsewhere. In 1976 the parish was under the directorship of Rev. E. Tremblay, CSSR, pastor, Clarence Demchak and William Fai.
The Ukrainian Catholic parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Broadview is under the pastoral charge of Montmartre.
