Estevan – Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (closed)

Church of the Assumption of the B.V.M. acquired 1960, located in south-easterly Estevan; R.M. 5.

ESTEVAN — The church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the first church of the parish.

The church structure was purchased in 1960 from a local mining firm, relocated on a two lot parish site in south-easterly Estevan and altered to the requirements of the Ukrainian Rite. Bishop Andrew Roborecki visited the parish on several occasions and served solemn Divine Liturgy in the church on September 13, 1970 and August 24, 1974.

The wood constructed rectangular structure, 60 x 26 feet, has an asphalt shingled roof and narrow exterior wood siding. In the interior the church contains the main altar, one sacristy, wooden pews in the nave which seat approx. 70 persons, electricity and central gas heating. The church has a north main entrance and a small meeting room at its south side. The church structure was purchased through the private donations of the parishioners under the leadership of their pastor Rev. John Worona and altered accordingly by their voluntary labour with the help of Yuriy (Jerry) Krupka. The two lot church and rectory site was donated by the Osaduik family.

In 1965 a rectory was purchased jointly by the Estevan, Weyburn, Tribune and Bienfait parishes and was placed on a newly poured basement near the church. The rectory basement was finished and now contains a chapel dedicated to the Holy Martyr St. Josaphat, Archbishop of Polotsk. This was the first pastoral rectory in southern Saskatchewan.

The reconstruction of the church and the development of the parish are greatly attributed to the voluntary work or financial contributions of the following parishioners: Josephine Barabash, Peter Barabash, Patrick Lukey, Jerry Krupka, Nicholas Galleta, John Potoma, George Potoma, Steve Osaduik, George Strop-ko, Paul Malaryk, Peter Bugaresti, Polly Soroka, Joseph Wasylynka, Nicholas Fai, Paziuk, John Stacyszyn, Dr. Morell Soroka, Alex Shklanka, Herb Freeborn, Michael Antoniuk, Yakym (Jim) Karkut and Nykola (Nick) Samasock.

Ukrainian settlers arrived in this area in 1910 predominantly from the Lubach county. They attended holy services at the neighbouring parishes of Bienfait, Weyburn and Tribune. The Estevan parish was established for the benefit of the older parishioners who were not able to attend services elsewhere. From 1956 holy services were served in private homes by Rev. Basil -Obarianyk. Through the efforts of Rev. Peter Lisowski the first parish executive was chosen on November 16, 1959 with Peter Barabash, president, Patrick Lukey, secretary and Nicholas Galleta, treasurer. The parish was then placed under the patronage of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a decision was made to construct a church (questionnaire 1967 and 1975). In 1961 the parish registered 40 families and in 1975, 18 families. In 1976 the parish was under the directorship of Rev. B. Obarianyk, pastor, Patrick Lukey, Ernest Yanish, Albert Petrash and William Smandych.

The Ukrainian Catholic parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Estevan is the seat of the pastoral district of Estevan with satellite parishes at Bienfait, Weyburn and Tribune. Pastor of the district is Rev. Basil Obarianyk.
