Wroxton-Village – Ss. Peter and Paul (closed)

Wroxton church of the Holy Apostles SS. Peter and Paul constructed 1949-1952; R.M. 241.

WROXTON — The church of the Holy Apostles SS. Peter and Paul is the first church of the parish.

The church was constructed between 1949 and 1952 on a two and a half acre site in westerly Wroxton. Bishop Andrew Roborecki blessed the church in 1965 and last celebrated Divine Liturgy in the church July 14, 1974.

The church is a wooden cruciform structure, 70 x 48 feet, on a high concrete basement with a large central dome and two smaller domes above the front towers. Its exterior walls are finished with imitation brick asphalt siding and contain rectangular windows with semicircular summits. Its gable roof is shingled while the domes have a white sheet metal finish and are apexed by wrought iron crosses. The church is east-west oriented with a west main entrance reached by high concrete steps; two additional entries into the church and church basement are found at the base of the towers on corresponding sides of the main entrance. The interior church walls are finished with donnacona, the floor is wooden and is partially carpeted. Constituting the interior are an elevated sanctuary with the main altar, two sacristies with exits to the church grounds, the nave, the vestibule and a choir loft; entry into the choir loft is by a stairway found along the south wall of the nave, opposite it at the north wall under the choir loft are built-in confessionals. Throughout the interior the church is dominated by a vaulted ceiling and the high octagonal central dome; this dome magnifies the church interior, enhances its acoustics and, due to its numerous windows, illuminates the interior with rays of sunshine. The church has a wealth of stylistic ornamentation consisting of four and six-winged angels, symbols, and many murals among which are included the four Evangelists in the pendentives below the dome, the large church patron painting and the traditional nave icons of the Mother of God and Christ the Redeemer which have small votive altars. This artistic decoration of the church was done in 1960 by Theodore Baran.

The church contains wooden pews seating approx. 200 persons; it has electrical lighting and central oil heating. The church basement is finished and contains hall
and kitchen facilities. The parishioners constructed the church through their private donations and generous voluntary labour. Chief foreman of the construction was Harry Shalley. All construction details were under the auspices of the church executive and construction committee which were headed by Rev. Joseph Den-ischuk, CSSR, and consisted of: William Krochak, John Skatula, John Derbowka, William Derbowka, Volody-myr Marteniuk, Michael Lucky and Volodymyr Havryshko (Hourisko).

Adjacent to the church stands a wooden cross placed in commemoration of the Holy Mission of 1952. The parish utilizes the cemetery near the Wroxton farms church located two miles north of Wroxton.

Ukrainian settlement in this area began in 1896 from the Horodenka and Husiatyn counties; the settlers initially organized into the Wroxton farms parish of SS. Vladimir and Olga (read Wroxton farms history). Settlement in the Wroxton village occurred approx. 1940 and thus gave impetus to the construction of the Wroxton church. At first a promotions committee was selected which initiated a construction fund, a year later the church executive was formed which also served as the construction committee; the promotions committee was called in 1948 under the directorship of Rev. J. Denishchuk and consisted of: Paul Brytsky (Bryski), Michael Lucky, John Derbowka, William Derbowka, Mykola (Nick) Derbowka, William Krochak, Joseph Krochak, Michael Zeianey, Volodymyr Marteniuk, Ivan (John) Badyk.

In 1949, during the church construction, the parish registered 22 members, in 1961 there were 90 souls (Directory), and in 1975 there were 45 member families. In 1976 the parish was under directorship of: Rev. Gregory Novak, CSSR, pastor, Emil Strotynski, Volodymyr Hourisko, John Derbowka, Albert Zeianey and Andrew Tataryn.

The Ukrainian Catholic parish of SS. Peter and Paul at Wroxton is under the pastoral charge of Melville.
