O Mother of Perpetual Help,
We come before your holy Icon seeking to follow Your Son.
Mary, please gently guide us to enter more deeply into the mystery of Redemption.
Help us as we contemplate the Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection of Your Son, Jesus, Our Redeemer.
Help us to receive and accept the Light of Christ that is in your arms. Mary, we present our needs to you and ask that you place them in the hands of your Son. Most Holy Mother of God, Our Mother of Perpetual Help, save us. Amen

The Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church solemnly proclaims the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help

03 July 2018

Ukrainians should pay tribute to the Mother of God’s Perpetual Help for the fact that, despite various factors and weaknesses of human life in the Ukrainian society, our state exists! After all, God’s power is revealed in the history of our people.

The Head and the Father of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav spoke about this during the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, on Sunday, July 1, during his sermon in the temple of the Mother of God’s Perpetual Help in Ternopil.

He was joined by numerous Bishops and priests from various eparchies. In addition, representatives of the city authorities, in particular, the Mayor of Ternopil, Serhiy Nadal, attended the Liturgy.

“When we discover the books of the Scriptures, we hear the word of God that reveals to us the face of the Living God and proclaims that the Heavenly Father in whom we believe is God of relentless help. Interestingly, this unceasingness of God’s help to a man has two signs. First of all, the Almighty never ceases to come to the person with His help. Moreover, His relentless help for us does not depend on whether we know about it, whether we are looking for it, or forget about it, and even when we do not know whether we should pray for it …,” with such words the Head of the UGCC appealed to the faithful.

Subsequently, the Head of the Church mentioned the second sign of God’s relentless help to us. “Heavenly Father is never exhausted to help us; it is us who are tired to seek and ask for it. The Lord never gives up to forgive us. Rather, we are tired of confessing our sins before Him, we are tired of loving God and our neighbor,” said the preacher.

According to the Head of the UGCC, the Lord has an initiative, because He knows what we need even before we ask for something.

According to him, on that day Ternopil went out and told the Most High to help us, because we believe in His help.

It is worth noting that on that day the Head of the UGCC solemnly proclaimed the Feast of the Mother of God’s Perpetual Help, which is why we are going to celebrate it now every year on the first Sunday of July.

Among the faithful of the UGCC there is a very widespread cult of the Mother of God’s Perpetual Help. Now we can find the icon of the Mother of God’s Relentless Assistance in many homes of our country and other states, regardless of denominations. That is why She is so important and produces deep meanings for the Ukrainians.

According to the preacher, the world falls into the state of the Third World War, which is, above all, a lie. As the philosophers say, the world lives now in the period of post-truth. “We, by our Christian faith and painful history, want to testify the truth about God’s relentless help, active through His Precious Mother,” said the Head of the UGCC.

“Let us pray on this day that we become witnesses, preachers, bearers of the hope of a new Ukraine by the power and grace of the Mother of God’s Perpetual Help,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav in the end.

It is worth noting that at the end of the joint prayer, the Head of the UGCC sincerely thanked all the clergy and faithful for attending and honoring this holiday.

Roma, December 11, 2015

Dear Confreres, Sisters, Lay Associates and friends,

On December 11, 1865, Blessed Pope Pius IX accepted the request of Fr. Nicholas Mauron, C.Ss.R., Superior General, and entrusted the Icon of Mother of Perpetual Help to his care, with the instruction to “Make her known to the whole world!”
In January, the Redemptorists received the Icon from the Augustinians, and on April 26, 1866, Our Mother of Perpetual Help was restored to public veneration in the Church of Sant’Alfonso.
In honour of this occasion, we received this message from the Holy Father, Pope Francis:

“Reverend Father Michael Brehl,
Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pius IX entrusting of the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to your Institute, the Holy Father hopes that this significant event will awaken a renewed and authentic devotion to the Holy Virgin, stirring the entire religious family and all who share in its charism to offer an ever more effective evangelical witness. With these wishes, His Holiness invokes, through the intercession of the Mother of the Redeemer, abundant heavenly graces, and sends the Apostolic Blessing.
From the Vatican, December 11, 2015

Papal Secretary of State”

Our Mother of Perpetual Help - Novena Prayer
 Our Mother of Perpetual Help

In this novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Mother of Perpetual Help from this icon pictured above) we pay tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary in asking for her assistance. This picture of the Blessed Mother with her Divine Son above has helped her provide strength, comfort and even miracles to the faithful for centuries!

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke your powerful name, the protection of the living and the salvation of the dying. Purest Mary, let your name henceforth be ever on my lips. Delay not, Blessed Lady, to rescue me whenever I call on you. In my temptations, in my needs, I will never cease to call on you, ever repeating your sacred name, Mary, Mary. What a consolation, what sweetness, what confidence fills my soul when I utter your sacred name or even only think of you! I thank the Lord for having given you so sweet, so powerful, so lovely a name. But I will not be content with merely uttering your name. Let my love for you prompt me ever to hail you Mother of Perpetual Help. Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for me andgrant me the favor I confidently ask of you.
(Then say three Hail Mary).

First placed in the Church of San Matteo in Rome in 1499, the picture was thought to be lost at one point after Napoleon’s armies sacked that church in 1798. Fortunately, however, it was in the care of the Augustinian fathers until Pope Pius IX ordered that the icon be given to the Redemptorist order at the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome in 1866 for public viewing once again. Since then, it has been copied and venerated in churches and homes all over the world.

Note in this picture how Jesus, while safely cradled in his mother’s arms, looks anxiously at St. Gabriel the Archangel, who holds the cross and nails for His Crucifixion. (St. Michael the Archangel, at left, holds the lance, spear, and the vessel of vinegar and gall for our Lord’s Passion as well.) The Blessed Mother looks at us solemnly, perhaps as if in contemplation of her beloved Son’s future Passion and death for our salvation!

Remember that when we pray this novena to our Lady of Perpetual Help, that we are not choosing to worship her over her Divine Son. She is “our Mother on the order of grace,” according to a Vatican II document, and all the graces Mary gives us come directly from our Lord. She is always ready to intercede with Him on our behalf, but never for anything contrary to His wishes.

As long as we approach her as we do Him, with sincerely humble and contrite hearts, we can count on her aid and guidance. Mary’s last spoken words in the Gospels concerned her Son when she said at the wedding feast at Cana “Do whatever he tells You” (John 2:5). If we persevere in our intentions to do Christ’s will for us,
