130th anniversary of Ukrainian immigration to Canada
September 7, 1891

On this day 130 years ago, Wasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypow, the first officially recorded Ukrainian immigrants to Canada, disembarked from the SS Oregon at Quebec City and stepped onto Canadian soil.

The two fellow villagers from Nebyliv in present-day Western Ukraine travelled westward to investigate the possibility of acquiring the “Free Lands” being offered by the Dominion of Canada to potential settlers.

They passed through the district of Saskatchewan twice during October on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Their findings led to the beginning of a mass migration of Ukrainians to Canada.

To commemorate the Ukrainian immigration to Canada and celebrate the achievements and contributions that these settlers have made to our country, Lamont County (Alberta) has embarked on a twinning initiative with the western Ukrainian Village of Nebyliv (Perehinske, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast). Nebyliv, the Village from which early settlers came, triggered the first of five waves of Ukrainian immigration.

Watch the Lamont County Twinning Celebration that took place earlier today.
