Twelve years ago this day, on March 23, 2011, His Beatitude, Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk was elected as Patriarch of the Worldwide Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, reported the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC Facebook page. His Beatitude was then serving as Eparchial Bishop of the Eparchy of the Holy Protection of the Mother of God of Buenos Aires, Argentina, when he was elected by his brother bishops to succeed the late Patriarch Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, M.S.U., as head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. The decision of the Synod of Bishops was ratified by the late Pope Benedict XVI on March 25, 2011, the feast of the Annunciation and commemoration of the martyrdom of Blessed Omelyan Kovch.
