The Holy See Press Office has announced the appointment by Pope Francis of the Right Reverend Abbot Jonas (Maxim), M.S.U., of the Holy Dormition Lavra of the Studite Brethren in Univ, Ukraine, as the Greek-Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Prešov, Slovakia. The Metropolitan-elect is a Slovakian national, born in the town of Levoča in 1974. He was ordained a priest in the Slovakian Greek-Catholic Church in 1998 by the late Bishop Ján Hirka, after studying at the Prešov Greek-Catholic Seminary. In 2004, Father Josef, as he was then known, entered the Studite Brethren at Univ, taking the religious name of Jonas (Йoан in Ukrainian, Jonáš in Slovakian). In 2018 he completed his doctoral dissertation on Studite Monasticism at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. Following the completion of his studies he was elected the Superior of the Monastery of St. Michael in L’viv. In 2020 he was elected Abbot of the Holy Dormition Lavra, motherhouse of the Studite Brethren, in Univ. The Metropolitan-elect is fluent in Slovakian and Ukrainian and speaks Italian, English, French, Polish and German.
