Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention

for the Month of April 2021

Universal Intention Fundamental rights

We pray for those who risk their lives while fighting for fundamental rights under dictatorships, authoritarian regimes and even in democracies in crisis.

The Pope Video is a global initiative developed by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer) to assist in the dissemination of the Holy Father’s monthly intentions related to the challenges facing humanity.

April 2021 Pope Video – Fundamental Rights»»

In many parts of the world, defending fundamental human rights can imply risk. This is true not only under dictatorial regimes, but also in some democracies undergoing a crisis. As Francis says, it requires courage to “actively” combat “poverty, inequality, the lack of work, land and housing, and the denial of social and labor rights.” This month, the Pope invites us to support those who willingly accept the consequences of defending fundamental rights in places where it isn’t easy, so that “they may see their sacrifice and their work bear abundant fruit.” Let us not leave them on their own. Pray, and share these words of the Pope so that those valiant people may feel accompanied in their work.

April Reflection – Fundamental rights»»

The first chapter of the book of Genesis tells us that humanity was created “in the image of God” (Gen 1:26-27).  This phrase still echoes with fundamental importance for our world today, because the image of God in us is our source of human dignity.  While we would hope that thousands of years after these verses were written for us, the human family might have established a greater mutual respect for what it means to be free and responsible creatures, still today many people have their most fundamental rights denied them.

Prayer of the Month – April 2021»»

Lord Jesus Christ who are close to the suffering,
we bring before you the desire that all people are treated with dignity, respecting their right to their development as worthy sons and daughters of God the Father.
Infuse us with your Spirit the strength and courage to defend the Earth, proper housing and the work of all.
Take special care of those who risk their lives for this;
shake our sleeping consciences,
and give us your grace to feel the pain of the other as our own,
and transform reality into a promise of life.
