Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention

for the Month of October 2021

Evangelization Missionary Disciples

We pray that every baptized person may be engaged in evangelization, available to the mission, by being witnesses of a life that has the flavour of the Gospel.

Prayer of the Month – October 2021

Lord Jesus Christ, who calls us to be apostles of your mission,
We come today to offer you our lives, what we are and what we have.
We want to work with you in your mission of compassion,
be faithful to the missionary vocation received in baptism,
allowing ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit.
Help us to be living witnesses of your Gospel,
celebrating the life that we receive in You;
going out of ourselves to encounter our brothers and sisters.
Receive our will to be open to serve with others for your Father’s Kingdom.

October 2021 Reflection – The Church

Monthly Reflection

Evangelization often gets a bad rap.

It’s the song by our favorite musician that we always skip. It’s the call we let go to voicemail.
It’s the kiosk in the store we have to walk by. We don’t want to be rude, but we also are just so not interested.

By ‘bad rap’, I mean the caricature of what evangelization entails that makes almost all of us cringe:

-approaching strangers …

-peppering them with questions …

-positing rehearsed logical proofs …

-pushing tracts into their hands …

-inviting them to come with us …

and making that hard sell to share the good news of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We imagine the awkward places where this conversation could occur (hockey game concession line, adjoining bathroom stall chat, DMV waiting room), and we think “Nope, that ain’t for me.”

I can’t blame you.

Some encouraging news: that’s not evangelization.

October 2021 Pope Video: Missionary Disciples

At work, with your family, with your friends, when you meet someone by chance… Any moment is suitable for being a missionary disciple. “If Christ moves you, if you do things because Christ is guiding you,” your testimony of life will make others ask, “What is the source of the love with which this person treats everyone—the kindness and good humor?” In this way, far from any form of proselytism, we can all be available for the mission, which is based, as Francis says, on an encounter between people, on the testimony of life of men and women. “Jesus asks us all, and you as well, to be missionary disciples. Are you ready?
