The World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations (WUCWO) was founded in 1910. It unites over 100 Catholic women’s organizations from over 50 countries. The UCWLC is a full member of WUCWO and shares a spot on the Board of Directors with the Catholic Women’s League of Canada.
WUCWO works on improving educational opportunities, reducing poverty, and advancing human rights and the dignity of every human being, beginning with the fundamental right to life.
By uniting Catholic women in a worldwide organization, WUCWO provides Catholic women with a voice on international platforms such as ECOSOC, the Human Rights Council (Geneva), FAO, the Council of Europe, and UNESCO.
Recently, WUCWO identified a need to conduct a sociological study (known as the World Women’s Observatory) of the situation of women in various regions of the world in order to provide WUCWO with an informed and, if possible, statistical basis upon which to base its proposals for future action. The first such study was conducted in 2021 in Latin America, funded largely by the Catholic Bishops of Latin America.
WUCWO now proposes to conduct a similar study in Africa and has appealed to its member organizations for financial support. The purpose of the Observatory is to provide visibility to the women of Africa whose sufferings and potential seem invisible and to generate and inspire:
• pastoral strategies of the Catholic Church and religious bodies of other faiths;
• public policies of nations;
• contributions to international bodies.
St. George’s Cathedral Branch of the UCWLC, is using this online auction of artifacts from around the world as a fun way to raise funds for the World Women’s Observatory in Africa.
If you wish, you may appoint a member of UCWLC as a proxy to submit bids on your behalf.
