1944 May 18
Day of Remembrance of the Exile of the Crimean Tatar People

On May 18, the world recognizes the oppression and the mass deportation of the Crimean Tatars 77 years ago by the Stalin regime that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. Let us solemnly commemorate this day and honour the memory of the victims.

Why this is important: The Crimean Tatars were permitted to return to Crimea in the early 1990s. However, after bravely resisting Russia’s illegal and brutal occupation of Crimea in 2014, the Crimean Tatar People are once again being subjected to systematic persecution and violation of their basic human rights by the Russian occupation authorities.

Background Information - Holodomor-Descendants-Network-17May2021.pdf
Holodomor National Awareness Committee (HNAC) Launches
Canadian Holodomor Descendants’ Outreach Initiative

On April 27, 2021, UCC National announced during a virtual event (watch event here) the Canadian launch of the Global Holodomor Descendants Network, a project of the Ukrainian World Congress established to continue the mission of Holodomor survivors for truth and recognition.

The Canadian Holodomor Descendants’ Outreach Initiative seeks to engage the community in helping to promote and build the network in Canada. The outreach initiative is co-chaired by three community activists, who will be reaching out to community representatives to determine how best to disseminate information locally and encourage a meaningful dialogue.

UCC member organizations and local branches are asked to share information about this project with their members and constituents and encourage Holodomor descendants to join this Network.

For more information, email HNAC Chair Iryna Mycak at irene.mycak@gmail.com or any of the three co-chairs of the outreach initiative listed in the background information.
