UCC Saskatchewan Hosts Successful 2021 AGM Online
New Board Elected for 2021-2023
On Saturday, March 6, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan held its first-ever virtual 2021 Annual General Meeting and Board Elections. Over 50 delegates and guests from Canora, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Warman, Wilcox and Yorkton joined the online event via Zoom.
Following a brief welcome and explanation of the meeting rules by Executive Director Danylo Puderak, the proceedings began with the singing of the national anthems – O Canada by Spivohrai Ukrainian Children’s Choir (Saskatoon) and Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy by the Regina Catholic Schools Ukrainian Program students. The anthems were followed by greetings from the National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the CEO of SaskCulture.
Nykola Dovgyy, President of the University of Saskatchewan Ukrainian Students Association, was elected AGM Chair and Rev. Father Patrick Powalinsky was elected Recording Secretary.
The business of the meeting, which featured the President’s, Executive Director’s and Financial reports, provided attendees an opportunity to learn about the activities of UCC Saskatchewan from 2020.
UCC Saskatchewan President John Denysek and Executive Director Danylo Puderak spoke to: the challenges that arose as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, UCC Saskatchewan’s response to these challenges, and some of the ways current and new programs and services were adapted and/or enhanced; the continued relevance of the 5 Priorities in UCC Saskatchewan’s 5-year Strategic Plan; changes to UCC Saskatchewan’s complement of staff; the special pandemic funding component of the Hromada Legacy Fund that provided member organizations a measure of relief from financial pressures; and, UCC Saskatchewan’s continuing healthy financial position, thanks to the diversification of revenue sources and sound fiscal management.
On behalf of the Fundraising Committee, Kevin Kardynal announced the launch of UCC Saskatchewan’s Spring Online 50/50 Lottery, the proceeds of which go to the Hromada Legacy Fund in support our province’s Ukrainian cultural community.

The Ukrainian representative at this year’s Eurovision contest is the band Go_A, consisting of Kateryna Pavlenko, Ihor Didenchuk, Taras Shevchenko and Ivan Hryhoriak. They will be performing their song “Shum”, a combination between modern electronic music and ethnic sounds. (Watch video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDeMfL8Ib9A&feature=youtu.be.)
The lyrics are a Ukrainian folk song variation sung in the “Shum” folk ritual. The ritual involved a game and was performed in spring. According to some, Shum refers to the god of the forest. But its modern take relates to the pandemic situation with the performers in protective suits, tired of the quarantine restrictions and summoning the forest god to free them so that they can dance, enjoy life and remember that they are part of something bigger.
