Memorial to the Victims of Communism - vandalized sign
Vandalism at Memorial to the Victims of Communism

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is saddened by the disgraceful act of vandalism that took place at the site of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism – Canada, a Land of Refuge.

The Memorial to the Victims of Communism is to be a national place of mourning, reflection, contemplation, and remembrance, honouring the millions of innocent victims murdered by Communist regimes throughout the world. UCC National Communiqué, July 6, 2020

Ukraine 2020 Flood Relief Appeal

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada Ukraine Foundation are calling on all Canadians to support relief efforts in Ukraine, where heavy flooding has caused devastation. The response is complicated by the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Heavy flooding has left three dead and thousands homeless or stranded. Thousands of people in more than 300 towns and villages in western Ukraine are without access to clean drinking water and power. It has also brought to the forefront the impacts of climate change and illegal clear-cut logging. UCC National Communiqué, July 2, 2020

Kupalo Festival
July 6-7 (Julian calendar)

The Kupalo festival is an eastern Slavic celebration of ancient pagan origin marking the summer solstice. Widely celebrated by Ukrainians, it features

  • а large bonfire over which unmarried young men and women leap for good fortune and long life
  • women divining their fates according to what happens to floating garlands with candles; a man indicates his interest in a woman by diving into the water to retrieve her wreath
  • the search for a mythical fern flower that blooms only on the eve of Kupalo; the finder is blessed with good fortune, strength, wisdom, prosperity and love
