Our Earth Day Walk took place on Saturday, May 1st in Saskatoon with the participation of our youth and young adults from our Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon. The purpose of this endeavour was to raise awareness of caring for our Earth and to pray for Mother Earth.

This event was organized by the Eparchial Youth and Young Adult Ministry Office, in cooperation with the Eparchial Human and Environmental Development Program of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon, and generously sponsored by the Annual Eparchial Appeal.

Sofiya Fayfruk, Youth and Young Adult Leader from the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saskatoon:

Our young people have shown their care and love for Mother Earth by bringing forth a new project dedicated to caring for our planet. This idea consisted of spreading awareness about the importance of respect and care for God‘s Creation in a way that would inspire others to make that first step into stewardship. This was achieved through a 6 km walk with its core intention being of picking up garbage along our route. This is how it went! We gathered together at the CPR bridge at 2 PM; everyone was given a green T-shirt and a Ukrainian mask to show that we were one group of people with a message. We also carried a poster with our message to let people know who we were and what we were doing. To begin the walk Dr. Lesya Sabada, Coordinator for the Eparchial  Human and Environmental Development Program, gave a wonderful 15 minute presentation on the importance of young people making a difference for the benefit of our environment. Afterwards, we all headed towards our destination: Dormition of the Blessed Mother of God Ukrainian Catholic Church for a Great Vespers Service. Along the way everyone worked very hard picking up as much garbage up as they could. After approximately 3 hours we finally reached our destination and took part in the Great Vespers Service led by Fr. André Lalach and Deacon Cyril Kennedy. We all understood that it would be impossible to change the world in one day, however it’s the small actions that change the world, especially if they are done with love and for the Glory of God!
