The Artificial Famine-Genocide in Ukraine 1932-1933

*The Ukrainian term for ‘hunger by starvation’ From the Ukrainian words holod (hunger) and mor (plague)
This artificial famine-genocide, created by Joseph Stalin, communist leader of the Soviet Union, led to the starvation of millions of men, women, and children in 1932-33. Why were Ukrainian people starved? Ukraine’s fertile agricultural land easily produced large quantities of grain for sale to Western countries – money needed for Stalin’s plan to collectivize, industrialize, and forcefully amalgamate smaller nations into one Soviet Union. Stalin was furious with the Ukrainians who openly defied the destruction of their national identity and the collectivization of their farmlands. Therefore, he gave orders to confiscate all grain and blocked entry into and out of the territory. He forcibly created conditions for the people who produced the grain to starve to death. The “Five Stalks of Grain” Law, written on August 7, 1932, threatened severe punishment, even death, for picking any food, including the smallest amount of grains or seeds from fields. Close to 25,000 people died each day. Soviet government officials suppressed news reports of the famine, distorted facts and destroyed documents. As ghost villages began to emerge, Stalin resettled ethnic Russians and other minorities on Ukrainian territory. When Welsh journalist Gareth Jones published the first major expose of Stalin’s deliberately imposed famine in the US, he was expelled from the USSR. In 1935, Jones was assassinated.
Not until Ukraine’s independence from Soviet Russia in 1991, could memories of witnesses be confronted publicly and the genocide was revealed. In 2008, Canada’s Parliament recognized the Holodomor as a deliberate act of genocide and declared the fourth Saturday in November as a national Memorial Day.
Recollections from a survivor: I had 3 younger brothers and a younger sister. I would collect any food I could get – porcupines, meat from dead horses – and bring it home to them. When there wasn’t anything left, all of them, and my grandmother died in front of my eyes from starvation. They were murdered through starvation. There was a harvest, and if the authorities had not wanted a famine, there would not have been one. They wanted to destroy the people who didn’t want to join the collective farms. (Pavlo Makohon)

Approaching the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, it is important to recognize another genocide happening in Ukraine. The continued brutality of Vladimir Putin’s Russian Federation savage invasion and unprovoked war in Ukraine is an attempt to destroy Ukrainian statehood, sovereignty, national identity and culture. Putin’s regime daily commits crimes against humanity including intentionally destroying basic water and food sources, blocking grain shipments… Weaponizing food, energy and migration.

ГОЛОДОМОР*
*слово «голодомор» складається зі слів «голод» і «мор» (морити – доводити
до виснаження, мучити), голодомор – доводити до виснаження голодом.
Цей штучний голод-геноцид, створений Йосипом Сталіним, комуністичним
лідером Радянського Союзу, призвів до голодної смерті мільйонів чоловіків,
жінок і дітей у 1932-33 роках.
Чому українці голодували? Родючі сільськогосподарські землі України виробляли велику кількість зерна для продажу західним країнам – гроші, необхідні для сталінського плану колективізації, індустріалізації та силового об’єднання менших націй в один Радянський Союз. Сталін був розлючений на українців, які відкрито кинули виклик знищенню їхньої національної ідентичності та колективізації їхніх сільськогосподарських угідь. Тому він дав розпорядження конфіскувати все зерно і заблокував в’їзд і виїзд з території. Він насильно створював такі умови, що люди, які виробляли зерно, помирали з голоду. «Закон про п’ять колосків», написаний 7 серпня 1932 року, передбачав суворе покарання, навіть смерть, за збирання будь-якої їжі, включно з найменшою кількістю зерна чи насіння з полів. Щодня вмирало близько 25,000 людей. Радянські урядовці приховували новини про голод, спотворювали факти та знищували документи. Коли почали виникати села-привиди, Сталін переселив етнічних росіян та інші меншини на українську територію. Коли уельський журналіст Ґарет Джонс опублікував перше серйозне викриття навмисно нав’язаного Сталіним голоду в США, його вигнали з СРСР. У 1935 році Джонс був убитий.
Лише після здобуття незалежності України від радянської Росії в 1991 році спогади свідків не могли залишитися в таємниці і геноцид був розкритий. У 2008 році парламент Канади визнав Голодомор навмисним актом геноциду та оголосив четверту суботу листопада національним Днем пам’яті.
Спогади людини, котра вижила: у мене було 3 молодших брата і молодша сестра. Я збирав будь-яку їжу, яку міг дістати – дикобразів, м’ясо мертвих коней – і приносив їх додому. Коли нічого не залишилося, вони всі, і бабуся, померли на моїх очах з голоду. Вони були замордовані голодом. Урожай був, і якби влада не хотіла голоду, його б не було. Вони хотіли знищити людей, які не вступали в колгоспи. (Павло Макогон)

Наближаючись до 90-х роковин Голодомору, важливо визнати черговий геноцид, який відбувається зараз в Україні. Жорстокість безжалісного вторгнення Російської Федерації Володимира Путіна та неспровокована війна в Україні є спробою знищити українську державність, суверенітет, національну ідентичність і культуру. Режим Путіна щодня вчиняє злочини проти людства, включно із навмисним знищенням основних джерел води та їжі, блокуванням поставок зерна… використанням продовольства, енергії та міграції як зброї.
