Ukrainian settlement in the Smuts district began in 1900, primarily by settlers from the Borshchiv and Horodenka counties. The community constructed its first church in 1905 on the site of what is now the parish cemetery. After this church was destroyed by fire in 1925, a second church was built. This building was later moved into the village of Smuts in 1954, where it stands today. The church was blessed in 1934 by Archbishop Basil Ladyka.
The Church of St. John the Baptist is lovingly maintained by its parishioners. Divine Liturgy is celebrated regularly during the summer months.
The parish of St. John the Baptist in Smuts is cared for by Dormition of the Mother of God Parish in Sutherland.
