The first Church of the Descent of the Holy Ghost was built in 1935. This church was destroyed by a lightning strike but the community came together to rebuild, anfd completed the present church in 1958.

The first Ukrainians arrived in this area in 1903. They established churches in the rural districts around Buchanan. Over time, as people relocated to town, the need for a church became evident. The Church of the Descent of the Holy Ghost continues to be well cared for by its congregation and is served by clergy from Canora.
